Review your goals and values
Take a look at the values and SMART goals you set for yourself – If you haven’t done these already you can find more information here. Remember, your values are the reason why you started this journey.
Do your SMART goals still feel relevant and realistic? If they do, keep going!
If they feel a little too far out of reach, you can make some changes. For example, if you originally set out to swim with a friend 5-days a week, try aiming for 2 days a week instead.
Ask yourself what’s getting in the way
It’s normal to face bumps in the road when we’re making changes to our everyday routines. When you do, rather than ‘trying to make up for it’ with excessive physical activity or food restriction, spend some time reflecting instead.
If you’re self-monitoring with a food or activity diary (you can read more about these here), it can be helpful to use this to identify what’s getting in your way. Some common barriers a lot of people face when making lifestyle changes are below.
‘I don’t have enough time’
Your physical activity doesn’t have to be done in one go, in fact it’s more beneficial to break your physical activity up into smaller bursts throughout the day.
‘I’m too tired’
Prepping your lunch to take to work the night before or preparing your dinner in the morning ready for when you’re feeling tired in the evening can help keep you on track. Don’t forget, even though you may feel too tired to be active, being physically active gives you more energy in the long run.
‘I don’t feel motivated’
Remind yourself of your values, keep them in places you will read them regularly. It can help to share your goals with friends and family, that way they’ll be able to support you too.
Be kind to yourself
It’s important to remember that the changes you’re making should stick with you for life, so they should be realistic and enjoyable for you to complete. That way, you’re more likely to want to continue with your healthy lifestyle choices even when you’ve reached your goal.
Remember, this is a long-term change so try not to feel guilty or be too hard on yourself when things don’t go to plan.
